When a garage door problem can't wait

A garage door that won't close leaves your home, your car and everything in the garage open to the street. A door that won't open can keep you from getting to work or getting your family out. Gateway Garage Doors offers emergency garage door service after hours. You can call us any time, including nights, weekends and holidays, and a local person will pick up.

During regular hours we are open seven days a week: Monday to Thursday 7 AM to 7:30 PM, Friday 7 AM to 7 PM, and Saturday and Sunday 7 AM to 7:30 PM. We also offer same-day service, and when you call we will tell you plainly what we can do and when.

Common emergencies we handle include a door stuck open or halfway, a broken spring after a loud bang, a cable that has snapped or come off, a door that has jumped off its track, and an opener that hums or clicks but won't move the door. We also help when a panel has been damaged and the door can no longer close safely.

While you wait for a technician, a few simple steps help keep everyone safe. Keep people and pets away from the door. Don't try to force it up or down. Don't touch the springs, cables or brackets at the sides and top of the door, because they are under heavy tension. If the door is stuck open and you can't close it, tell us when you call so we can plan the visit. If you can safely pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener, do that only when the door is fully closed.

Emergency garage door questions

My garage door is stuck open or halfway. What should I do?

Keep people and pets clear of the door and don't try to force it. Don't touch the springs, cables or brackets. If it is stuck open, your home is exposed, so call us at (314) 766-4292 and tell us what you see. We will explain what we can do and give you safe steps while you wait.

My garage door won't close or goes back up before it closes. What's wrong?

Start with the safety sensors near the floor on each side of the door. Wipe the lenses, clear anything in the way, and check that both lights are steady. Misaligned sensors are a common cause. If the door still reverses, the opener's limit settings or a mechanical problem may be the cause, and a technician can check it.

How do I know if a spring has broken?

Common signs are a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the torsion spring above the door, or a door that feels very heavy or won't lift more than a few inches. Don't try to lift it by hand, and call us.

Can I replace a torsion spring myself?

We don't recommend it. Torsion springs hold a lot of tension and can cause serious injury if handled without the right tools and training. Torsion springs sit in a bar above the door, while extension springs run along the horizontal tracks. Either type is best left to a technician.

The opener hums or clicks but the door doesn't move. Is that an emergency?

It often points to a broken spring or a problem inside the opener. Don't keep pressing the button, because that can strain the opener. Call us and tell us the brand and any blinking light codes, such as on a LiftMaster, Chamberlain or Genie.

My door came off its track or a cable snapped. Can I still use it?

No. Stop using the door, because an off-track door or loose cable can fall or jam. Keep clear of it and call us. We will get it back on track or replace the cable.

Do you really take emergency calls at night and on holidays?

Yes. Emergency garage door service is available after hours, and you can call us any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. During regular hours we are open seven days a week, 7 AM to 7:30 PM most days and 7 PM on Fridays.

How much will an emergency repair cost?

The cost depends on the repair, such as a spring, cable, roller or opener. Our pricing is upfront and flat-rate, so you know the price before we start. We also accept cash, credit and debit cards, checks, Zelle, Venmo and financing.

Which garage door and opener brands do you work on?

We service and install many brands, including Clopay, Amarr, C.H.I. Overhead Doors, Wayne Dalton, Raynor, Windsor Door, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Sommer, Marantec, Ryobi, Linear and Stanley.
