Signs your garage door cable needs repair
Lift cables run along both sides of your garage door, from the bottom corners up to the spring system. They carry much of the door's weight every time it opens or closes. When one frays, slips off its drum or snaps, the door usually shows it quickly.
Common signs include a door that hangs crooked or sits lower on one side, a cable that is loose, frayed or hanging down, a door that jams partway up or down, or a door that will not lift at all. You may also hear a loud snap, or see the cable bunched up near the drum at the top of the door.
If you notice any of these, stop using the door and the opener. Forcing a door with a damaged cable can bend the tracks, damage panels and hurt someone. Please do not touch the cables or the brackets at the bottom corners of the door. They are under heavy tension. Call us instead and we will take care of it.
How our cable repair works
You call a local team
Phone (314) 766-4292 and a real person from our St. Louis team answers. Tell us what the door is doing and where you are, and we will set up a same-day visit.
We inspect the whole system
A cable rarely fails alone. Your technician checks the cables, drums, springs, rollers and tracks, and the door's balance, so the repair addresses the cause as well as the symptom.
You get a flat rate before we start
We explain what we found and give you an upfront, flat-rate price. You decide whether to go ahead.
We repair it and test the door
Most repairs are completed in a single visit. We install the new cables, reset the tension, and run the door through several cycles to confirm it moves smoothly and level.

Garage door cable questions
My garage door cable came off. Can I still use the door?
No. A cable that has come off its drum or snapped leaves the door unbalanced. Using it can bend the tracks, damage panels or let the door fall. Keep the door closed if you can, keep people and cars clear of it, and call us.
What causes a garage door cable to snap or slip off?
The usual causes are normal wear and fraying, rust, a broken spring that suddenly shifts the load, worn rollers or bent tracks, and a door that has been forced while something was stuck. Cables often wear on both sides at once, so we check both.
Can I replace a garage door cable myself?
We do not recommend it. The cables are connected to the spring system, which holds a great deal of tension. Releasing the wrong part can cause serious injury. Torsion springs in particular should be handled by a trained technician.
How do I tell a cable problem from a broken spring?
A broken spring often brings a loud bang, a visible gap in the torsion spring, or a door that feels far too heavy to lift by hand. A cable problem more often leaves the door crooked or hanging on one side. Because the two often go together, we check both on every visit.
My door won't open or is stuck halfway. Is it the cable?
It might be. Stuck doors can come from a cable, a spring, an off-track roller or the opener. Do not pull the door by hand or keep pressing the remote. Disconnect nothing and call us, and we will find out which part has failed.
Why does my garage door make grinding or squeaking noises?
Noise often means worn rollers, dry hinges or a frayed cable rubbing on the drum. Our garage door maintenance and tune-up can catch these problems before a cable fails.
How much does garage door cable repair cost?
The price depends on your door, the cable type and whether other parts such as springs or rollers also need work. We give you an upfront, flat-rate price after looking at the door, and before we begin the repair. Financing is available, and we accept cash, credit and debit cards, check, Zelle and Venmo.
Which garage door brands do you work on?
We service and install many brands, including Clopay, Amarr, C.H.I. Overhead Doors, Wayne Dalton, Raynor, Overhead Door and Windsor Door. For openers we work with LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Sommer, Marantec, Ryobi, Linear and Stanley.
